Frequently asked questions
General
A: SDG 14 aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. It focuses on protecting marine ecosystems, reducing pollution, and promoting the sustainable management of marine resources to ensure the health of the oceans and marine life for future generations.
A: Healthy oceans and seas are essential to our existence. They cover 70 percent of our planet and we rely on them for food, energy and water. Yet, we have managed to do tremendous damage to these precious resources. We must protect them by eliminating pollution and overfishing and immediately start to responsibly manage and protect all marine life around the world.
A: Some of the biggest threats include overfishing, ocean pollution (especially plastic waste), climate change (including ocean acidification and rising temperatures), and habitat destruction (like coral reef damage and mangrove deforestation). These threats harm marine biodiversity and disrupt ecosystems essential for human survival.
